It's an official language of the UN, the EU, NATO, the IOC, and one of the working languages of most major international organisations. But beyond the impressive statistics, here's why it's actually worth your time.
Career
French remains one of the most useful languages for international business, particularly if your work touches Europe, West/Central Africa, or Canada. It's the second most-taught language in the world after English, and in industries like diplomacy, luxury goods, aviation, hospitality, and international law, French fluency is a genuine differentiator on a CV — not a decoration.
For students based in Dubai specifically, I've seen French open doors in aviation (Airbus, French-linked carriers), luxury retail, and hospitality management, where the Francophone client base is significant.
Culture
Access to French cinema, literature, and music in the original language is a different experience entirely from subtitles or translation. French is also the gateway language to a huge amount of African, Caribbean, and Canadian culture that doesn't always make it into English-language media — Francophone Africa alone has some of the fastest-growing populations and richest literary traditions in the world right now.
Cognition
This part isn't marketing — it's well-documented in cognitive research. Bilingualism is associated with improved executive function, better multitasking, and in some studies, delayed onset of age-related cognitive decline. Learning any second language as an adult also meaningfully improves your first language — most of my English-speaking students tell me they understand English grammar better after a year of French, simply because they're finally forced to think about grammar consciously.
The Honest Caveat
